Research areas:

A main focus of our research centers around the development of novel synthetic methodologies based on the use of biocatalysts for the preparation of pharmaceutical intermediates or drugs. Since the majority of today´s active pharmaceutical ingredients are chiral molecules, stereoselective syntheses plays an important role also in our work. In order to combine high synthetic efficiency, excellent enantioselectivity and sutainability we are studying in particular catalytic processes with a specific emphasis on enzymatic syntheses. Among key challenges in this field are the search for enzymes suitable for novel type of (non-natural) biotransformations, the application of biocatalysts for the construction of ligand libraries, the development of highly efficient processes (which are additionally feasible on technical scale), and the combination of biocatalytic and chemocatalytic routes towards chemoenzymatic one-pot multi-step syntheses
